Understanding The History Of Art
I used to think that art exists in a vacuum. I would judge each piece only according to my personal aesthetics, and would intentionally ignore anything that I heard about art history. The history of art seemed largely irrelevant to me. Who cared about the evolution of different art forms? All I cared about was the way that each painting looked.  When I took a class on the history of modern Art, however, it completely changed my mind.
If you have never studied the history of art, you are in for a big surprise. You see, society and art interact very closely. Any art movement is usually a response to a social movement or historical event. By studying the history of art, you can gain a deeper appreciation of the art that you already know and love. In addition to this, you can discover new art that you might never have come across otherwise. The history of art is one of the most fascinating areas of academic inquiry. It should be required for any student in a major college.
